SWEP Spreading the Good Word at STEAM

SWEP Spreading the Good Word at STEAM

In preparation for the year-end eco Earth Day event, SWEP and Envirolution held a STEM Fair at Truckee High School featured an eco-action art booth called "Message in a Bottle." The booth was a huge success, drawing in numerous community members who were interested in learning about ways to reduce their impact on the environment. The STEM Fair featured over 40 interactive booths, including local and regional experts and representatives from colleges and the district’s high school pathway programs. Each booth provided hands-on, practical experiences for students to explore college and career options in STEM fields.
SWEP is a local non-profit organization that promotes environmental stewardship by collaborating with local teachers, school districts and community partners to address pertinent environmental issues. The organization's Green Teams, in partnership with the Squaw Valley Institute’s VOY/CE program, met with Anna Cummins and Dr. Marcus Eriksen in advance of the event, giving students the opportunity to develop meaningful questions and a broader understanding of the impact plastic pollution has on our oceans and local environment.
The (SWEP) and Envirolution groups later hosted the Earth Day Trashion Fashion Show, featuring Anna Cummins and the 5 Gyres Institute. The event, held on Earth Day, aimed to raise awareness about plastic pollution and its impact on the environment. The Trashion Fashion Show, held on December 3, 2015, at the Resort at Squaw Creek, featured a discussion led by Anna Cummins, Dr. Marcus Eriksen, and the 5 Gyres Institute. The event examined the mystifying 5 gyres, tangible methods to reduce plastics pollution, and raised awareness for the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and its devastating effects. The event included a live auction, art exhibits and a raffles, and a cash bar and light snacks were provided. Overall, the event was a great success, with many attendees being inspired to take action to reduce their plastic footprint and promote environmental stewardship.
