Surfrider Foundation Event: 5 Gyres Institute, Anna Cummins + Marcus Eriksen

The Squaw Valley Institute recently hosted a powerful and informative event on plastic pollution in our oceans. The event featured a presentation by Anna Cummins, Co-Founder and Global Strategy Director of The 5 Gyres Institute, and her husband Dr. Marcus Eriksen. The 5 Gyres Institute is a non-profit organization that aims to raise awareness and educate the public about plastic pollution in the oceans.

Attendees were deeply impacted by the work of Cummins and Eriksen, and many left the event with a new understanding of the problem and tangible ways they can change their own consumption, use and thinking about plastic. The Squaw Valley Institute would like to extend its thanks to the event's partners and sponsors, including Sierra Watershed Education Partnerships, Missy Mohler, Tahoe Truckee Unified School District, Tahoe Expedition Academy, Arts for the Schools, League to Save Lake Tahoe, Resort at Squaw Creek and the Shane McConkey Foundation EcoChallenge.

In addition to the event, the Squaw Valley Institute's new youth program VOY/CE also partnered with local organizations such as SWEP, Tahoe Expedition Academy, Shane McConkey EcoChallenge and Squaw Valley Preparatory, to inspire conversations about plastic pollution in local schools. The program participants had the opportunity to meet with Cummins and Eriksen in advance of the event, and were able to ask meaningful questions and share their own experiences and ideas to deepen their understanding of the impact of plastic pollution on our oceans and local environment. The Squaw Valley Institute would like to thank all the families and participants of VOY/CE for their enthusiasm and support.
